the Vines

Vermentino is one of the most popular white grape varieties in Italy.

The ideal areas for its cultivation are those near the sea, where other vines would be affected by brackish winds and prolonged drought.
Vermentino gives its best especially on the Tyrrhenian coast, in Liguria, Tuscany and Sardinia.

The scent of its wine is delicate and elegant, the mouth is full and well balanced, supported by the right freshness and rich flavour.
Viognier is a white grape variety originating from the Rhône Valley.

It resists drought but in many respects it is difficult to cultivate; it requires great knowledge and is very sensitive to albugin and powdery mildew.
Its grapes yield very little and must be harvested quickly.

It produces a wine with a singular scent of peach, apricot, white violet, honey and spices. The taste is rich, soft and of measured tension.

  • 2024 -  Robert Parker - Wine Advocate
LEOPOLDINO DOC Vintage 2022 - Reviewer Monica Larner
The score attributed to our Leopoldino on Wine Advocate is 89.
"Thin and streamlined in texture, the 2022 Maremma Toscana Vermentino Leopoldino shows basic aromas of grapefruit, green apple and crushed stone. The wine's easygoing personality would work well next to take-out sushi or a bruschetta piled high with tomato and fresh basil."

  • 2024 -  Jancis Robinson's Ratings - JR
    LEOPOLDINO DOC Vintage 2022 - Tasting date January 19th, 2024 - Reviewer Tamlyn Currin - Score 16.5/20
"This blend of Viognier and Vermentino really works! Peachy. Snappy. Salty. Full of attitude and charm. So juicy it drips down your chin. The Viognier seems to have brought out the most delicious Vermentino-ness from the Vermentino. It's rock salt and peaches, sea spray and iodine, orange pips and dusty pollen. Drinkability score 20/20."

  • 2022 - The Wine Advocate - Reviewed by Monica Larner
    LEOPOLDINO DOC 2020 IP: 91
"Mostly Vermentino with a 15% addition of Viognier, the Pepi Lignana Fattoria il Casalone 2020 Maremma Toscana Vermentino Leopoldino is fresh, racy and tonic with strong salinity that underlines its Mediterranean roots. I can’t say that the wine is especially complex or important, but boy does it hit the spot on a hot summer day. You’ll want to pair it with a salad lunch, erudite or with the healthy foods featured on menus today."
