"MareMMMa the nature of Wine"

Fifth edition of “mareMMMa, the Nature of wine” ended a few days ago, the fair with the largest selection of labels in the area. As per tradition, the fair took place in the Granaio Lorenese, in Alberese, in the splendid setting of the regional park.

It is written "MareMMMa, the nature of wine" and it is not a typo! Each of the three "M"s represents a consortium: "Maremma Toscana", "Montecucco" and "Morellino". The three denominations represent the oenological excellence of a growing wine-growing area where extremely different terroirs and climates are found in the facets of red, white and rosé wines. The synergy between these three consortia is strongly increasing the interest of the wine sector in the labels of this surprising wine-growing area.
The event featured 117 companies with around 550 labels for tasting, an incredible selection of references from all the DOC and DOCG of the Tuscan Maremma - Maremma Toscana, Montecucco and Morellino di Scansano.

MareMMMa: a great success ..
A great success generated by great interest!
The event saw a record attendance by sector operators, sommeliers, restaurateurs, wine sellers, distributors, as well as wine enthusiasts. All guests had the opportunity to participate and enjoy the sensorial experience proposed by immersing themselves in the walk around tasting, and delighting in a selection of gastronomic delicacies designed to enhance the identity of the territory.

The labels from our cellar belonging to the Maremma Toscana Consortium have stood out among the labels, garnering great appreciation from industry workers and enthusiasts, wine lovers who, increasingly stripped of the guise of simple onlookers, reveal themselves to be attentive consumers who choose the products to bring to their table in a very conscious way. Value for money, first of all, but also a lot of attention to traceability, method and area of production.

We take this opportunity to thank the three consortia that made this interesting event possible, bringing to light the oenological excellence of a peculiar and uncontaminated territory and with a growing reputation on the national and international markets.

The words of the three presidents of the protection consortia at “mareMMMa, the Nature of wine”

Francesco Mazzei, Presidente del Consorzio Tutela Vini della Maremma Toscana.

“Our Denomination is confirmed as one of the most dynamic not only at a regional level but in the entire winemaking framework of the country; Vermentino - with the introduction of the Superiore mention - now represents 32% of the DOC and is giving us great satisfaction, alongside the Rosso and Rosso Riserva typologies which, in terms of quantity, are in second place and Ciliegiolo, another native great personality with noteworthy quality tips; The red blends are also increasingly interesting, both in the Bordeaux style and with the addition of more traditional varieties".

Bernardo Guicciardini Calamai, President of the Consortium for the Protection of Morellino di Scansano DOCG
“There is great anticipation for mareMMMA which in its fifth edition has established itself as the reference event for the market, an occasion in which the numerous producers of Morellino di Scansano meet with operators and enthusiasts to taste Sangiovese from the coast together, renowned for its natural and authentic elegance. mareMMMA is increasingly the event that marks the beginning of preparations for a new exciting tourist season for our wonderful territory".

Giovan Battista Basile, President of the Montecucco Wine Protection Consortium.
“'mareMMMa, la Natura del vino' is now an unmissable event for the regional market, offering individual producing companies a unique opportunity to tell their story to local operators. As a Denomination we are aiming to increasingly meet new consumer trends, also in terms of typologies, without losing sight of the territorial identity that represents us. In particular, we believe that Rosso DOC and Vermentino can offer the right response to the needs of the new generation of consumers, looking for increasingly easy and non-demanding drinking. Our territorial location, altitude and temperature ranges, in fact, allow us to maintain good levels of acidity and to give both of these types a fresh and young connotation that goes well with new market trends. Certainly the DOCG remains the signature par excellence of Montecucco, but our area finds its richness in its countless diversities and we are proud to give voice to each of them".

IThe three Consortia

Consortium for the protection of DOC Maremma Tuscany wines

Consortium for the protection of DOC Maremma Tuscany wines
The Consorzio Tutela Vini della Maremma Toscana was founded in 2014 after the awarding of the DOC itself with the aim of promoting the quality of its wines and guaranteeing compliance with the production standards set out in the specifications, also dedicating itself to the protection of the brand and the assistance to members on the regulations governing the sector. Today the Consortium has 457 member companies that vinify their own grapes and bottle their own wines - for a total of approximately 7 million bottles produced per year. The Consortium operates in the entire province of Grosseto, a vast area in southern Tuscany that extends from the slopes of Mount Amiata and reaches the Maremma coast and the Argentario up to the island of Giglio. The native vines - Ciliegiolo, Canaiolo nero, Alicante, Sangiovese, Pugnitello, Vermentino, Trebbiano, Ansonica, Malvasia - have been joined by international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet franc, Merlot, Syrah, Viognier, Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Petit Verdot. The aim of the DOC Maremma Toscana today is to fascinate and amaze lovers of beauty and goodness from all over the world, enhancing the diversity of this surprising territory and broadening the horizons of Tuscan taste through the variety and quality of its wines.

Consortium for the protection of Montecucco wines
The wines of Montecucco, a territory that comes to life where the soft forms of the Tuscan Maremma quickly give way to the slopes of Monte Amiata, are born from the grapes grown with passion in the 7 municipalities of the controlled and guaranteed designation of origin, the DOCG in force since September 2011 : Arcidosso, Campagnatico, Castel del Piano, Cinigiano, Civitella Paganico, Roccalbegna and Seggiano. The Denomination, with its 68 associated companies, aims at a development that can combine the productive aspects with the promotional and tourist ones of the territory: the area, highly suited to the production of Sangiovese, enjoys extremely favorable climatic conditions, close to the Tyrrhenian Sea - from which it is only a few kilometers away as the crow flies - and to the now extinct Amiata volcano, which with its 1,738 meters of height dominates the entire territory between the Maremma, the Val d'Orcia and the Val di Chiana. Here Etruscans, Romans, Lombards, Benedictine monks, Sienese dominion and the Medici family followed one another: a historical stratification that has left indelible traces and testimonies that are still visible today in the villages, in the stupendous farmhouses and in the period residences, in the production of oil and, above all, wine.

Morellino di Scansano protection Consortium
Recognized as a controlled denomination of origin in 1978, Morellino di Scansano recently celebrated its first 40 years. In this period much has been done to promote it, by virtue of its intrinsic qualities and growing international renown, so much so that it obtained the Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin in 2006, starting from the 2007 harvest.
The Morellino di Scansano Protection Consortium, founded in 1992 by the will of a small group of producers, is active in this work of promotion and protection. Over the years, the Consortium has gradually expanded its membership sector, to the point of welcoming more than 200 members, over 90 of whom have at least one of their own Morellino di Scansano labels on the market.
